National parks ‘run out of cash’ for EU programme

The cost of managing protected habitats “substantially exceeds the resources available at present”, the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has told the EU.
It was estimated in 2010 that €185m would be needed each year to implement the Natura 2000 network of protected habitats required by EU law, but far less has been spent, with budgets cut incrementally between 2008 and 2014, the NPWS has informed the European Commission.
The commission is reviewing the Birds and Habitats Directives, the EU’s main nature protection laws. It will then decide whether the laws should be revised. The commission has asked government departments in all member states to comment on the laws’ effectiveness, benefits, relevance and cost.
Environmental NGOs across Europe, including An Taisce, are campaigning against revision. A parallel public consultation has received more than 150,000 responses from citizens backing the NGOs’ position, they say.
